Nate Parker to Bring Nat Turner’s Story To The Big Screen In ‘The Birth Of A Nation’
Actor and Director Nate Parker (Beyond the Lights, The Secret Life of Bees) is bringing an American story to the big screen with his latest film which the actor wrote, directed and also starred in. Set in the antebellum south, his highly anticipated film, The Birth of a Nation stars Parker as Nat Turner, an African-American slave and preacher who led a slave rebellion of both slaves and free blacks in Southampton County, Virginia in 1831.
Though Turner was initially successful in hiding for a couple of months following the uprising, he was later found, tried, convicted and sentenced to death by hanging.
The film will premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in January, Parker stars alongside Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Chik? Okonkwo, Jackie Earle Haley and Gabrielle Union.
