Are Alternative Gender Roles In The Home An Impossible Dream?
Gender roles vary in different cultural contexts. What works or may be considered ?appropriate? in Sweden may be very different from what is considered the norm in a country like Chile.
In a public service announcement produced in 1983 by the United Nations under the direction of Czech animator Dagmar Doubkova, a wife and mother (who we?ll call superwoman) somehow manages to single-handedly run a household, take care of three children and maintain a factory job while catering to the needs of a husband who is content in his role as a couch potato.
The video portrays very stereotypical views of gender roles in the home, but also subtly illustrates how family dynamics shift when men fully engage and participate as equal partners in a relationship.
It?s the stuff for roundtable conversations.
